hi jen.

was poking around the internet (ie: 'research' on diocletian, constantine and such important things) and ended up here.

the internet is an odd highway...like going to 7/11 down the street for cigarettes, sign posts flashing everywhere and turning at every one like a kid at the night amusement park, ending up in Tuvalu on its birthday handing out cigs.

and here along the way (no idea how now.... i was in a grammer site as well; maybe that was it. don't know.)

anyway. just a little note saying you're a very good writer.

a real writer.

keep writing somewhere, jen.

I love your position on yak cheese. It is different, it will always be rare, and it is GOOD! The butter is even better if fresh and stored by modern standards. Yaks are not everywhere in the US and Canada but they are showing up on small farms where folks are discovering how great a multi purpose animal they are. These are the places you will find great yak butter, yogurt, and cheese.
Thnaks for the great post!

The Unterrified Democrat is the paper from the town where my dad grew up. I always laugh when I hear the name. Although its usually called the "UD" by locals.

Heh... that's hilarious.

I don't think Socrates would be down with the vids. Most video games are interactive only on a very basic motor/sensory level. Not much "speech" or "interrogation" going on.

It's fun to imagine Socratic video games.

The latest Novillero album has at it's poetic nadir the rhyming of "curmudgeon" with "bludgeon". It's a great album otherwise.

Very good point - the fundamental principle of most legal systems is that one is judged by one's actions, not one's thoughts. (thank Dog. )

My concern - and my inflammatory, yellow-journalism subject heading - is because our actions *are* our personal responsibility, whether or not they're prompted by conscious or unconscious motivations. Whether we like it or not, we're victims of our subconscious - our "blink" responses. So, for example, I might consciously believe in gender and racial equality, but my actions, influenced by my subconscious responses, might be contrary to my conscious beliefs.

In "blink", Gladwell suggests that the way to change those subconscious judgements is via exposing yourself to those people that you subconsciously de-value. However, I've been exposing myself to positive-role-model-type women (including myself) for most of my life, but the Implicit Association Test tells me that I still have a bias against women. Even though I'm a woman. sheesh.

I'm currently reading Blink and I'm about to the part where they talk about the mental associations. I think it's fascinating, but the topic should be handled carefully--since those kinds of issues are touchy. I dont think having subconscious relations like that make you a bigot--they're just the result of the social norms around you. You're responsible for what conscious actions you take, and you cant blame that on the environment. But these little things in the back of your mind are a different creature, and until you become aware of them and work to fix them, I dont think you can necessarily be wronged for having them.

Could it be your father's friend knew these books would be treated with the kindness and respect they deserved? It would be nice to think so. I'm glad to hear that you plan to share them with others.
